Let’s go back to Genesis, to the very creation of the earth and then Adam and get some idea of how generous God the Father is.
There are a number of explanations for the order and way the earth was created and there is no need to repeat it here. Let’s just say on the sixth day when the creation of Adam started, the planet was a perfect environment for man in his natural state to thrive.
Then God breathed His own breath into man and he became a living soul. With that man is told to go and take ownership of the whole thing!
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.”
Genesis 1:27-30 NIV
Think of what a wonderful thing this is! All the living creatures including man had a plant based diet. There was no hostility or competition and nothing preyed upon the other. All things and everything was delightful and probably very entertaining!
Think about our generous God. He gave Adam dominion over the whole thing and:
“Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.”
Genesis 2:19-20 NIV
Think of all the animals and birds in existence at the time. Adam was allowed to give each one its name! But no suitable helper was found for him. But think of this. It probably took quite some time for the Creator to parade all these creatures in front of Adam and allow him to get to know each one and give it a name. During this time he became familiar with his environment, and most importantly, he was getting to know God intimately while being mentored by Him!
Think of the education he was being provided! Read Chp 2 of Genesis and think of God’s generosity in placing man in such an enchanted place as Eden and then grooming and mentoring Adam and preparing him for his bride, Eve!
“The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
Genesis 2:23-24 NIV
And sadly think of his love for Eve. Of everything he discovered, the most fascinating thing he found in the end was this amazing creature he named Eve! In the end, he chose to go with her and ate the forbidden fruit so that whatever her destination, he could be with her.
This is symbolic of Christ’s generous love for His own body, the church. And just like Adam, He chose to share in our life with all its hardship and misery so He could die with us and redeem us.
In the end, God our Father restores everything! And we’ll see that in Christ, He is still and even more generous than in the beginning!
