What is the mind of Christ? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Have you ever wondered if you have the mind of Christ? And what is a Christ like character? With this message, I’d like to present some thoughts concerning this. Let’s look at some scripture and see if we can realise what it is, exactly.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 https://www.bible.com/114/PHP.2.5-8
The NIV says “He made Himself nothing”. Other translations say “He emptied Himself”. Let’s see what Luke says about this, starting from childhood:
“And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”” Luke 1:47-55 https://www.bible.com/114/LUK.1.47-55
Here’s what is required of Mary as she goes to the priesthood for her purification rites after His birth: “But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’ ”” Leviticus 12:8 https://www.bible.com/111/LEV.12.8
“Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the LORD ”), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”” Luke 2:22-24 https://www.bible.com/114/LUK.2.22-24
As you can see, Joseph and Mary were not what we today would consider “well off”. All they could afford were two doves or pigeons. They weren’t what we would consider today as affluent. We see even from His birth, He was associated with the humble and lowly!
Here’s what it says of Jesus childhood:
“Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?”he asked.“Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:41-52 https://www.bible.com/111/LUK.2.41-52
Study this scripture closely. It shows He was a reliable and trustworthy child while growing up. Without even a second thought, they put their trust in Him. They seemed shocked that He would behave in such an uncharacteristic manner. And what is the 5th commandment?: ““Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy 5:16 https://www.bible.com/111/DEU.5.16
As the scripture says, He was humble and lowly, and came to earth and was obedient to His parents, even when they had no real clue as to His calling! We see Him constantly going through life as an empty vessel and totally reliant on His Father, and teaching the disciples to humble themselves, to be as little children, that the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven is the serveant of all!
Here’s what He says of Himself: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke iseasy and My burden is light.”” Matthew 11:28-30 https://www.bible.com/114/MAT.11.28-30
What about you, dearly beloved? Are you gentle and lowly minded? Are you an empty vessel leaving off self to make room to be filled with the the Holy Spirit, as Jesus was? My prayer is that He will give you insight into this, and with that, you’ll enter into His rest!
